Idiot of the Day: MIT Student wears fake bomb “art” to AIRPORT.

This is pretty unbelievable. This girl is lucky she isn’t dead. Well, she’s definitely brain dead. What did she think was going to happen? Hey, let’s make it look like I’m strapped with explosives! It’ll be fun!

MIT Student Arrested With Fake Bomb

BOSTON (AP) — An MIT student wearing what turned out to be a fake bomb was arrested at gunpoint Friday at Logan International Airport and later claimed it was artwork, officials said.

Star Simpson, 19, had a computer circuit board and wiring in plain view over a black hooded sweatshirt she was wearing, said State Police Maj. Scott Pare, the commanding officer at the airport.

“She said that it was a piece of art and she wanted to stand out on career day,” Pare said at a news conference. “She claims that it was just art, and that she was proud of the art and she wanted to display it.”

Simpson was charged with disturbing the peace and possessing a hoax device. A not guilty plea was entered for her and she was released on $750 bail.

During the hearing, Simpson smiled as she entered wearing a T-shirt and sandals. After she posted bail, she left in a taxi with a man who identified himself as her boyfriend, but neither would answer more questions from reporters.

Prosecutor Wayne Margolis had requested $5,000 bail, saying Simpson showed a total disregard for the situation she was in — an airport after the 2001 terrorist attacks.

Ross Schreiber, who was appointed to represent Simpson, said she was not a risk to flee, was a good student with no prior convictions and she cooperated with authorities.

He said she had gone to the airport to meet her boyfriend. “She was there for legitimate purposes,” Schreiber said.

Simpson was “extremely lucky she followed the instructions or deadly force would have been used,” Pare said. “She’s lucky to be in a cell as opposed to the morgue.”

Simpson is a Massachusetts Institute of Technology sophomore from Hawaii, officials said.

The battery-powered rectangular device had nine flashing lights, and Simpson had Play-Doh in her hands, Pare said.

The phrases “Socket to me” and “Course VI” were written on the back of her sweatshirt, which authorities displayed to the media. Course VI appears to refer to MIT’s major of electrical engineering and computer science.

Simpson was a member of MIT’s swimming and diving team in 2006, according to the team’s Web site, which lists her hometown as Kihei, Hawaii. MIT spokeswoman Patti Richards said aside from confirming she was a student, the school did not have any comment.

She was arrested about 8 a.m. outside Terminal C, home to United Airlines, Jet Blue and other carriers.

A Massachusetts Port Authority staffer manning an information booth in the terminal became suspicious when Simpson — wearing the device — approached to ask about an incoming flight, Pare said. Simpson then walked outside, and the staffer notified a nearby trooper.

The trooper, joined by others with submachine guns, confronted her at a traffic island in front of the terminal.

“She was immediately told to stop, to raise her hands and not to make any movement, so we could observe all her movements to see if she was trying to trip any type of device,” Pare said. “Had she not followed the protocol, we might have used deadly force.”

Pare said Simpson took a subway to the airport, but he was not sure if she had the device on at that time.

The major praised the booth attendant, but said the incident is a reminder of the terrorism threat confronting the civil aviation system. Two of the four passenger jets hijacked on Sept. 11, 2001, took off from Logan.

The city was the focus of a major security scare Jan. 31 when dozens of battery-powered devices were discovered in various locations. Bomb squads were deployed and some transportation links were closed temporarily. They turned out to be a promotion for the Cartoon Network.

Associated Press writers Mark Jewell and Rodrique Ngowi contributed to this report.

  1. God bless students!

  2. ‘We might have used DEADLY force”….

Shouldn’t the (not-launched) fighters on 9-11 have used deadly force? But were they not restrained by the indefinat powers of the ViceKing of the USA, the Highest of the Highest mister Cheney?

Being a couple of shit-assed and brain-dead idiots like the mister Pare and his fellows, they should have seen that there was nothing dangerous to the thing she was carrying!

Aren’t they trained to see what Is and what is NOT a bomb?
Don’t they have knowledge of what devices are dangerous?

    If not, they are morons!
If yes, they should have used that knowledge, that training, and not acted in endangering a citizen’s life!!

But then, with the powers of the Bananarepublic America installed in them, ofcourse knowledge is not important, power-show and intimidation is the most important thing to do!

  3. I thought MIT students were smart??? I guess there is a difference between Book Smart and Common Sense…

  4. Dear lord. I’m actually speechless.

  5. Wow, you’re right MasterAdrian. Your knowledge of bombs and their complex intricacies is vast indeed! What idiots that those airport security officers were that they didn’t know exactly what kind of a device it was just by looking at it from a distance! They should have used their x-ray vision powers, then they would have seen that there was nothing under the shirt! Or maybe if they had just been psychic, they would have know it was an innocent citizen just trying to bring a little art into thee world by making it look like she was a suicide bomber in an airport. They have a lot to learn from this experience. The next time it looks like someone walking around a common terrorist target is rigged with explosives, the proper thing to do is walk right up to them and politely ask ” Excuse me madam, if I may be so bold… is that a bomb underneath your clothes or is it just career day?” Anything else would be a power show, a move to intimidate people, and just gosh darn mean, right? We’ve got to be sweet and loving to potential terrorists, that’s the most important thing to do.

    Thanks for illuminating us!!

  6. hmillic, great hat you have there!

I took the plane from Greece to Germany on September 11th. The plane didn’t crash so I can continue drawing my Evil Santa character 😀

But who could tell a real from a fake bomb just by looking at it anyway?…

  7. “Potential terrorists”… when I read the statements by King Bush, and read the reports on what the Vice-King Cheney (in regard to Israel-Iran), then it is a known fact that ALL individuals, being them either from an arab country or a never-america-leaving national from the USA a potential terrorist!

Wiretapping without legal warrants on American citizens, Secret detention Centers around America were American citizens are kept who are suspected(!) of possible terroristic acts (mind you, SUSPECTED but not sentenced, and POSSIBLE terroristic acts, wereby no proof is present of such acts), Reading ALL email-traffic between Americans on a national and international level, Full support by the US-administration of a privat(!) security-company that kills 5 and 6 year old children in cars in Iraq simply because their parents don’t stop for heavily armoured CIVILIAN clothed guys… sure!

Ofcourse the MIT-idiot should have been wiser, with her assumed intelligence she could and should have known that ANYTHING out of the ordinary nowadays in America, at any airport means being in danger of being shot, being at least minimally been tasered and being physically attacked by a couple of CIVILIANS in uniforms, supposedly being security-staff… sure!

BUT in reality it is a fact that no one is safe anymore for brutality by so-called in charge people, who feel they are entitled to do what they want, without any check and balance!

The other day I entered the USA by plane, and was halted when I wanted to leave the plane, not because I am a terrorist (my looks are not arabic or equaling an illegal human trafficker), but because a privat security guard had the IMPRESSION(!) that my plane carried a sign that was looking like a logo of an arabic news company!

The impression(!) of that 25year old ignorant not-informed so-called securityguard was responsible for missing five appointments, two meetings with staff, and a meeting at the UN…..
(he’s fired now, but that aside).

The fact is that people are no longer safe in what was once a safe country, living according to lawfull rules!

And yes, on a serious note, the MIT-girl should have known that at airports no jokes are possible, there are dangers of idiots to do terrible things, BUT those security-guards could have indeed called for police, instead of acting as if they are the law!
