George Clooney injured in motorcycle accident in Jersey…911 Tape and More..

So, George Clooney was in a motorcycle accident last night in Jersey. Apparently he was hit by a car on an narrow road in Weehawken. He cracked a rib and got some road rash (gasp! I hope that handsome mug wasn’t damaged!) and his girlfriend of the moment, cocktail waitress Sarah Larson, suffered a broken foot. You can listen to the 911 call, here.

Here’s an account of the incident, from the Sydney Morning Herald:

The crash occurred as Clooney and Ms Larson sped up to overtake on the right side of a car that was preparing to make a right turn, said Weehawken police Sergeant Sean Kelly. Both were wearing helmets.

It was not known whether the car’s driver, whose identity was not immediately released, used a turn signal. The accident was under investigation.

“It’s a he-said, she-said right now, but you can’t pass on the right in Weehawken or anywhere in Jersey,” Sergeant Kelly said. Mr Rosenfield said the accident occurred when the vehicle signalled a left-hand turn, but turned right and struck Clooney’s motorcycle.

“The car signalled left. George was riding to the right. The driver decided to make an abrupt right turn and clipped George,” Mr Rosenfield said.

Everyone’s fine at this point, so not a major deal, but what I want to know is….. what’s it like to clip Clooney? It sounds like it was the Cloonster’s fault, but its still scary. You’re just driving along a quiet road in Weehawken, New Jersey, maybe out to go get some Haagen Dazs or a latte, and then WHAM, you’ve sent a motorcycle crashing to the ground! If that isn’t harrowing enough, you get out of the car to see if the people are alright, only to discover the person you just launched is one of the most famous actors in the world. How mortifying is that? Are you temporarily starstruck? Do you get out your camera phone when they’re knocked unconscious? It is a lot to process all at once, I’m sure the emotions were running high. I just hope that this person savored every agonizing minute, because they are a part of history! No matter what, that person has a conversation starter at every cocktail party they go to for life… “So this one time, when I broke George Clooney’s rib…” Lucky !

All kidding aside, I have a little pearl of wisdom for famous and non-famous people alike: Car beats motorcycle, every time. You may be the stealthiest cycler on the planet, but that doesn’t mean everyone else on the road is a great driver. No matter what, you get hit by a car on a bike, you’re going to be seriously injured or worse. It may be sexy and cool, but they’re not worth it!!
